The Conch: A Blog

The Republic of Consciousness Shortlist Readings.

On Thursday 19th March 2020 we should have been gathering in the Brick Lane Bookshop in East London: there would have been iffy wine, inadequate space for your knees, ‘more-of-a-comment-than-a-question’; and 5 wonderful writers/translators reading from their books.

Instead, we stayed at home, and the readings came to us. From their homes across the UK, and in one case, Milan, the Republic of Consciousness writers sent in readings from their books.

They’re all below - if you like the readings, please consider ordering them from Brick Lane Bookshop. They’re good people and have the entire shortlist in stock, just waiting for ya: https://www.bricklanebookshop.org/shop/index.html

Toby Litt is reading from PATIENCE, published by Galley Beggar Press. All hail the yellow submarine perched above his left shoulder.

Here’s Minoli Salgado with a story from her collection BROKEN JAW, published by the87press. Best wall award. I love a red wall in a house.

Hanne Ørstavik dialled in from glamorous Milan, with a short reading from LOVE, translated by Martin Aitken and published by And Other Stories.

Fresh from making it back to the UK in the nick of time, Frank Wynne read from his translation of ANIMALIA by Jean-Baptiste Del Amo, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions.

And finally, Isabel Waider sent in a reading from their second novel WE ARE MADE OF DIAMOND STUFF, published by Dostoyevsky Wannabe.
